Terms and conditions:

  • The OpenText Learning Subscription, Security Edition - Premium or the Flex Training Package may be used for any EnCase vClass classes, provided that the holder meets the course prerequisites.
  • Manuals for the vClass courses will be shipped so that they arrive prior to the beginning of class, provided the course tuition is paid.
  • Students who register less than one week prior to the start date will receive a temporary electronic copy of the manual. A physical copy of the manual will be shipped but is not guaranteed to arrive before the class start date.
  • vClass students receive an electronic version of the same EnCase certificate of completion as students participating in classroom training. This certificate can be used to fulfill the training requirements for EnCE, EnCEP, and CFSR certification applications and renewals.
  • To receive a certificate of completion and obtain credit for this virtual course or vClass, you must:
    • Use your assigned machine to run EnCase software and follow the provided instructions to complete exercises relevant to the subject matter.
    • Observe presentations conducted by instructor(s).
    • Participate in question/answer sessions during class presentations.
    • Answer instructor queries through presentation chat at least three times per hour.
  • After purchasing an individual course, students have 12 months to use their vClass course credit (or for OpenText Learning Subscription, Security Edition - Premium holders, until the subscription expires). Any unused credits will be forfeited after 12 months or when the subscription expires.
  • Students must return unused materials within 60 days from the date of purchase to be eligible for a refund. All materials must be returned in resalable condition.

To help maximize their use of EnCase products, OpenText provides access to its world-class courses online with EnCase Training OnDemand.

EnCase Training OnDemand is designed specifically for professionals in law enforcement, IT, legal departments, and government agencies who need to remain onsite due to investigation pressure, budget cuts, or staffing concerns, but also need to prepare and provide credible testimonies for digital investigations. With EnCase Training OnDemand, investigators can receive the critical training they need to do their jobs effectively from anywhere in the world at their own convenience.

EnCase Training OnDemand offers the exact same level of training currently available at the OpenText training facilities. All exercises, lectures, quizzes and exams are presented online in guided, interactive tutorials and streaming video presentations.

  • Some courses offer the ability to conduct practical exercises on a remote workstation. A web browser and the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is utilized to connect. Mac OSX workaround is available, but not supported.

Terms and conditions:

  • Students have 30 days to complete each course. The 30-day period begins when the student logs in and starts viewing the online course content.
  • Manuals are only available electronically. Physical copies of manuals are not available for Training OnDemand courses.
  • The OpenText Learning Subscription, Security Edition may be used for any of our Training OnDemand classes, provided that the holder meets the course prerequisites. Students may only be concurrently enrolled in two Training OnDemand classes.
  • After purchasing an individual course, students have 12 months to use their Training OnDemand course credit (or for OpenText Learning Subscription, Security Edition holders, until the subscription expires). Any unused credits will be forfeited after 12 months or when the supscription expires.
  • EnCase Training OnDemand students receive an electronic version of the same EnCase certificate of completion as students participating in classroom training.

On-site training

This program is designed for organizations that need EnCase training but do not have a computer training laboratory or travel budget. OpenText instructors will travel and conduct the training onsite at an organization, supplying all the necessary equipment and materials. This program is ideal for organizations who need to train a number of employees at the same time but cannot afford to have personnel away from the office. Students will receive the same high-quality instruction that they would at an OpenText training facility.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of six students in the U.S. or 8 internationally; maximum 24 students.
  • Classes will be held Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm ET
  • The hosting agency will supply a room that will seat the number of students that will attend the course with an adequate power source, a white board, and a projection screen.
  • OpenText will provide an instructor, notebook computers, a digital projector, and all classroom materials.
  • The pricing is the same as our regular instructor-led courses with these additional charges:
    • Lab shipping fee. The fee is $1,000 USD for training locations in the U.S. and $1,500 USD for international locations.
    • Instructor fee. The instructor fee will be calculated based on estimated travel expenses.
  • EnCase Training Packages (OpenText Learning Subscription, Security Edition – Premium; Learning Subscription, Security Edition; Flex Training Package) cannot be used for on-site training.

No discounts are available and on-site training fees cannot be combined with any other offer or program. There are no refunds for unused seats.

Paul Carpenter

Paul Carpenter

Instructor

Paul joined the EnCase Training team as a full-time instructor in 2018 and is based in the Pasadena office. Prior to joining OpenText, Paul worked in the Pasadena Police Department for more than 28 years, retiring as a Sergeant. His technology experience includes helping build the department’s Crime Analysis Unit from scratch, establishing linking databases and a mapping interface. A public/private partnership with a major technology company, to create a smooth interface for searching and mapping crime data, earned him the Chief’s Special Award for Technology. He was later selected to be part of a newly established Southern California High Tech Task Force, investigating high-tech crimes and conducting computer forensic examinations for a three-county area. He founded the Pasadena Police Department’s Technology Crimes Unit, setting up its initial forensics lab and working guidelines. Paul has created course content and led California P.O.S.T. approved training classes in Computer Forensics for First Responders, High Tech for Supervisors and Crisis Negotiations. While working full-time in forensics, Paul was also a part-time instructor for OpenText. In addition to A+ Certification and other training received while working in forensics, Paul holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Biola University and maintains the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) Certification.

Eddie Garren

Eddie Garren has been in the field of computer forensics since 1999 as a practitioner as well as conducting research and development of computer forensic investigative techniques and training curriculum. Eddie has an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee and a graduate degree in Network Security from Capitol College. Prior to joining OpenText as a full-time instructor based in the Chicago office, he served as a Criminal Investigator with the Georgia Governor’s Office and as Forensic Computer Examiner with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Eddie also spent five years as Computer Crime Specialist with the NW3C where he led the development of numerous training classes for NW3C and the Department of Homeland Security. Eddie has been a guest presenter at the FBI training academy as well as at several international and regional conferences. He serves as an adjunct professor at Fairmont State College and maintains several certifications, including Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE).

Manfred Hatzesberger

Manfred joined the OpenText Training team as an instructor in January 2006 and currently serves as Director, Professional Development & Training based in the Pasadena, California facility. Originally from Germany, Manfred conducts numerous courses at our U.S.-based facilities and around the world in English as well as his native language. Prior to joining OpenText, Manfred worked in Germany with Cisco Systems GmbH, AXENT Technologies (Symantec) and as an IT consultant. Manfred maintains several certifications, including the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE), EnCase Certified eDiscovery Practitioner (EnCEP) and CISSP.

Humberto joined OpenText as a full-time instructor based in the Pasadena, California facility in December 2019 after a 28-year career in law enforcement with the Los Angeles Police Department. Humberto worked as a Computer Crime Specialist with the police department’s Cyber Crimes Section for 10 years and was promoted to Lab Manager, a position he held for 3 years until his retirement. Humberto was also a member of the United States Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Southern California Crimes Task Force.

Simon Key

Simon Key joined OpenText as a full-time instructor in 2004, following a 17½-year career as a police officer working for Northamptonshire Police, a small county police force located in central England. In 2008, Simon moved into the training department's Curriculum Development unit. While continuing to teach, Simon concentrates on maintaining and updating the Macintosh Examinations and EnScript Programming courses as well as develops new courses. Prior to joining the UK training team, Simon spent the majority of his police service as a uniformed custody sergeant in charge of the welfare and treatment of detained persons. He performed these duties until 2000, when he became Northamptonshire Police's forensic computer examiner. During his time in that post Simon became involved in training for a U.K.-based group of forensic computer practitioners called “F3.” Simon set up the first F3 website, was a member of the F3 committee and presented several training sessions at F3 events. Simon continues to present at the annual F3 training workshops on a regular basis. In addition to his involvement with the F3 group, Simon also took on the role of visiting lecturer at the U.K. Defence Academy campus of Cranfield University at Shrivenham. Simon is a regular presenter at the OpenText Enfuse conference and spends a substantial amount of time writing EnScript programs, some of which have been incorporated into EnCase itself.

Nathen Langfeldt

Nathen Langfeldt joined OpenText in 2008 and is currently a Principal Training Consultant. He previously worked as the Lead Officer overseeing a private security team. He currently splits his time teaching all over the world and serving on the Curriculum Development team. Nathen teaches nearly every EnCase course and also devotes time to developing new course content and delivery methods. He is also a regular guest speaker for the Computer Information Technology program at the College of Lake County. Nathen maintains several certifications including the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) and the EnCase Certified eDiscovery Practitioner (EnCEP).

Jeremy Le-Roy

Jeremy joined OpenText as a full-time instructor in April 2013. Prior to that, Jeremy enjoyed a 14-year law enforcement career with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. During that time, he earned a degree in Applied Science with a focus in Computer Networking from South West Louisiana Technical Community College. After graduating, Jeremy was transferred into the Information Technology division. In this division, he was responsible for desktop support through complex server and data storage environments. Jeremy became the alternate computer forensic examiner and the lead technical advisor to the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office for issues pertaining to computer forensics. In addition to traveling and instructing at various OpenText training facilities, Jeremy currently serves on the Curriculum Development team. Jeremy has attended computer forensics training and maintains the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) and Certified Forensic Security Responder (CFSR) certifications.

Carl Purser

Carl Purser joined the OpenText U.K. training team as an instructor in November 2010, following a career with the Metropolitan Police, London UK. During his years there, Carl’s duties included as assignment to the computer forensic section in September 2002. Beginning as a technician, Carl rapidly advanced to the role of examiner, focusing on Windows and Apple computer systems as well as associated storage devices. He also was tasked with the examination of numerous iPhone and iPad devices. Carl additionally instructed police officers in the areas of evidence handling and crime scene searching, relating to the digital crime scene and the capabilities of the digital examination laboratory. Carl received an OCU Commanders Commendation for Professional and dedication to duty as a result of his activities in a digital investigation of computers and media involving child exploitation materials. Carl obtained training in several areas, including iPhone and Macintosh Forensics. He has obtained an MS degree in Information Security and Computer Crime issued by Glamorgan University as well as a BSc Electronic Engineering with Computing issued by Kingston University. Carl also maintains the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) certification.

Jasper Rowe

Before joining OpenText, Jasper held a number of teaching posts both in the U.K and Germany . Jasper joined OpenText as a Technical Services Engineer in 2005, supporting customers with the entire EnCase product range from versions 5 through 8. During that time, Jasper also assisted German, Austrian and Swiss customers in their own native German language as well as moderated the German language forum. After almost twelve years' experience in the Technical Services Department, Jasper joined the training team in June 2017 as a full-time Instructor. Jasper is a graduate of Staffordshire and Liverpool Hope Universities and maintains the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE), EnCase Certified eDiscovery Practitioner (EnCEP) and A+ certifications.

Steven Schulman

Steve joined OpenText full time in 2015, serving on the Professional Services team to help federal clients build out digital forensics labs, support network and system administration, assist with digital forensics examinations using EnCase and other forensics tools and install and implement the EnCase suite of products. In 2017, Steve transferred to the training department and now serves as a full-time Instructor based in Dulles, VA. During his seven years in the cyber security field, he has worked with various intrusion detection and prevention tools (IDS/IPS) and firewalls and has received extensive system and network administration experience. Prior to joining OpenText, he held positions at Raytheon and Deloitte. Steve has a Bachelor’s Degree in Homeland Security with a concentration in Computer Security as well as a Graduate Certificate in Information System Security Management from Villanova. Steve also maintains the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certifications.

Daniel joined OpenText in July of 2006 and has worked in various facets of the business, including Pre-Sales, enterprise implementations and forensic examinations. Daniel also oversaw the eDiscovery processing for what would have been the world’s largest class action suit. His personal knowledge and experience in the industry has helped shape processes internally at more than a quarter of the Fortune 100 Companies and more than 15% of the Fortune 500. Daniel is currently a full-time Instructor with OpenText and travels to various facilities to conduct several courses, which supports his passion for research and the sharing of knowledge and experience. Daniel maintains his EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) and EnCase Certified eDiscovery Practitioner (EnCEP) certifications.

Lisa Stewart

Lisa Stewart began her career in 1986 as a Training Technician at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Computer Economic Crime Division after receiving Bachelor of Science Degrees in Math and Computer Science from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, Georgia. In 1988, she was selected as an Instructor and was assigned to conduct training in computer forensics. In 1990, she was promoted to Senior Instructor of the Financial Fraud Institute and inherited responsibility for the Criminal Investigations in an Automated Environment and Seized Computer Evidence Recovery Specialist training programs. In 2002, she was designated the Acting Division Chief, supervising approximately 20 instructors while maintaining duties as the program manager for the Seized Computer Evidence Recovery Specialist training program. Lisa joined OpenText full-time in 2003 and relocated from Glynco, Georgia to Vienna, Virginia. For the past several years, Lisa has served as the Manager of Training, Learning Services, EnCase Training, East Coast USA.

Bill Thompson

Bill Thompson

Bill Thompson joined OpenText in 2006 and serves as an instructor as well as the Director of the U.K. and EMEA office. His tenure has included travel throughout Europe, delivering specialized training to a variety of agencies. Prior to joining OpenText, he enjoyed a 22-year career with Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force Police (RAFP) as a Special Investigator and Crime Scene Examiner. He subsequently became a member of the RAFP Computer Forensics team, conducting examinations involving service personnel and supporting civil authorities and NATO. Upon retiring from the RAF, he worked in the private sector as a computer forensic practitioner for a telecommunications service provider and for the Forensic Science Service. Bill has successfully completed post-graduate training at the Royal Military College of Science at Cranfield University completing the Computer Forensics Foundation, Networking and Internet and email courses. Bill maintains several certifications, including the EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE).
